Hi, I'm interested in buying a diamond approximately 70 - 90 odd points.  I have been looking at a Passion8 diamond which displays hearts and arrows.  These diamonds appear to cost a fair bit more than other diamonds which display the same hearts and arrows.  I guess the question is, can I safely buy a diamond with a GIA certificate marked Cut:  excellent, Symmetry:  excellent and Polish:  excellent that isn't branded as Passion8 but still displays the same hearts and arrows.  Does the brand name matter so much, do they have some exclusive right to an exact proportion, etc. for a cut - can I buy just as well without the specific brand name?  If I know that I will get the best diamond that I can, I will buy the Passion8 but how do I know that I can't buy something just as scintillating and firey buying another type of diamond?  All information will be greatfully accepted.  Thanks, Hetoldmenottodoit.

You can safely buy any diamond with a GIA report that states Excellent for Cut, Symmetry, and Polish.

With regards to the Hearts & Arrows pattern that is visible (with the correct tools), on the loose stone, once the stone is set you won't usually be able to see the Hearts & Arrows pattern anyway, so while H & A is a term often used, it is used primarily as a marketing tool to increase the perceived value of a given stone.  When you also stop to consider the perceived value of a company's brand image, you then see how prices suddenly seem inflated.

Thank you for your response, that gives me confidence that I don't have to opt for the "brandname".  Could you tell me what color level is best value for money and what you think the minimum clarity would be for best value for money also.  Considering that I have a few different diamonds and they vary with their "sparkle and scintilation" what are the main factors which make up the "sparkle and scintilation"?  Do you have any guidelines that I could follow please - is there a formular?

Cut is the most important factor when it comes to sparkle / scintillation, then clarity.

Rather than chasing the 'perfect' diamond I suggest that you decide what your budget is for your diamond.  Only once you have done that can we really make suggestions regarding what size etc stone would give you the most bang for your buck.

I am prepared to spend around $10,000 Australian on the diamond with the setting price extra.  I definitely don't want to wear a one carat diamond, it's too big for my hand.

Great.  Your budget should get you a very high quality diamond in the size range you specified (0.70 Ct - 0.90 Ct.).

Did you have a preference regarding diamond shape?  What about the ring (I assume it's a ring) setting?  Do you have any preference on that (metal type, with / without diamonds on the setting etc.)?  I assume you are in Australia.  Do you only want to consider purchasing from within Oz / will you look worldwide?  Is the budget for the diamond only, or inclusive for diamond & setting?

Sorry for all the questions, but I want to provide you with the most specific information I possibly can.

I only want to buy a round brilliant diamond and have it placed into a very low (in height) platinum bezel setting on an 18 kt yellow gold knife edge ring. I would like the setting under the bezel to be open so that you can see the diamond through the setting and thus also making it easier for cleaning.  I only want it bezel set because I would want to wear it all the time and I do that with my other bezel set rings, but not my rings with claws.

The $10,000 Aust. would be for the diamond alone, I would allow another $2000 Aust. for making up the ring.

I think I would be too scared to purchase from overseas, I don't know anyone who has done that to find out about their experience.    I suppose if I could be convinced about the safety/security side of things I might consider it (especially if it got me more bang for buck).  I do think that I would have to be very brave to purchase something of this amount of money sight unseen though.  I appreciate you responding to me.

I originally asked about whether you would consider purchasing from outside Oz because my exposure is predominantly in the US market.  It wasn't until a while after that I thought about it further and any saving you made may be taken up with import taxes etc?

Let's see if any o our Oz based members have any info they can share with you...
