Hi carbonman, You seem to be interested in knowing about black diamonds. Charcoal, graphite and diamond are all made of the Carbon element. They are so different due to their differences of molecular structures. What is called "black diamond" is in a transitional carbon state between graphite and pure diamond. A black diamond gem is very rare, they are also very hard and beautiful.A black diamond, or carbonado, is much younger than other diamonds. There are two explanations for the origins of black diamonds. 3.5 billion years ago, carbon atoms were squeezed into crystals in the infernally hot dense mantel under the earth's surface. Through volcanic eruptions, black diamonds reached the earth's surface between 100 million and 1.1 billion years ago. Black diamonds are also believed to have originated from a meteorite shower billions of years ago when meteorites crashed onto the earth's surface and left behind lumps of carbon.
Despite the fact that a black diamond is significantly more rare than colorless diamonds, colorless diamonds have continue to be the mainstay symbol for marital love. De Beers Consolidated Mines has largely been in control of any available black diamond. They have created an interest in the gem through controlling the price. Believing that the interest in a black diamond is based on their rarity, they have merged with various black diamond mines discoverers to continue diamond scarcity. Hope that answers your question! gemguy |

Black diamonds are genuine diamonds treated with radiation to make their color appear black. Normally, regular diamonds form deep within the surface of the Earth. Hundreds of miles down, pressure and heat is enormously high, and this causes a mineral metamorphosis.
