Hi..I am new to this forum and need advice. I am buying a new diamond for my upcoming anniversary. I did a bit of research and finally narrowed it down to buying a loose diamond from local jeweler..1.27 c, G color, s12 clarity, cut in ideal range, polish good, symmetry very good. It is certified by IGI and has the certification number lasered on diamond. It looks great. Price is $6600+tax. I would also have them set the diamond in new setting. As long as I have them check it every 6 months, the diamond is guaranteed forever. Right before I was going to buy it...another diamond jewelry store I visited called. This place is in a kind of seedy building...and I found them in the yellow pages...and he is more of a wholesaler. When I was in there last Friday, they didn't have any certified diamonds of the size I wanted. Today he called and said he called his dealer and he has two certified diamonds that can be shipped for me to see. Both are GIA certified, one is 1.3 carat, G color, S11, and ideal cut for $7100 including tax, the other is 1.33 carat, G color S11 and excellent cut for $7600 including tax. They would both have a certificate...but no laser number on diamond. Sorry to be rambling....but my question is...how do I know that the certificate is real? With people making fake money...couldn't fake certificates be made as well? How do I protect myself when buying in a situation like this? I must say I am intrigued...since I would be getting slightly bigger, and better diamond...for about the same amount. And, he said that the GIA certificate is better than the IGI Lab certificate. Can anyone shed any light on how to determine if what I am looking at matches up what is on the certificate...and more importantly...if the certificate is authentic?

Hello there, I am new to this forum as well but what I would suggest to you is go for the second diamond. The best way to tell if that diamond and certification match is one of two things. Make sure the place your buying from has a good reputation and once you recieve the diamond, take it to a local jewller or even somewhere higher end (GIA, EGL) and have then reappraise it. If the two certs are similar then your ok. I know this sounds kind of stupid but being a wholesaler myself, whenever I recieve new diamonds with certs I have them checked over by a local jeweller to make sure they are accurate because yes it is possible that the cert is fake. Usually it will only cost ($20-40) at a local jewller to get them to look at it, and they will tell you pretty quick if its the same as the cert. But other then that the decision is upto you.

There are no such things as brand name diamonds, only pure carbon formed stones.

Thank you for your advice. I have since learned that one of the diamond's (the 1.3) also has a lasered ID on it that matches the GIA certificate. I called GIA Labs in Ca. and they confirm the information on my certificate. I asked the wholesaler to have the diamond shipped to him for my inspection. As I don't really know what I am looking for...they have agreed - if I buy it - to write on the invoice that it can be returned if an independent appraisal doesn't match up with what is on the certificate. I also called Visa and they will stand by the purchase - as long as I have in writing that "the jeweler agrees to total refund if the diamond does not meet certificate specifications." So...I am feeling a little more confident about buying a loose diamond this way. I also checked eBay for this guys reputation (since he sells on eBay)...and he had 384 positive comments, and one negative. I called the Better Business Bureau and they have no complaints on him. And tomorrow I will call 4 of his customers that he provided as reference. whewwww...he'll be glad to get rid of me as a customer!!! I have put him through the wringer for this relatively small diamond purchase (But, to me...it is a BIG deal).

Oh, by the way...the only thing on the GIA certificate that I am unsure of is the culet is "medium". I read about culet on internet...and still am not sure if this is good, bad...or nothing of significance?

Again, thanks for your help.
